install printer

I am just starting to use linux mint and have installed release 13, Xfce 32-bit edition. I am enthusiastic about moving to linux from Microsoft windows XP. But I know little about it and my questions are very 'newbie'.

The problem I am posting about here concerns trying to install my Dell printer v313w. I found a driver for it here:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/...iverId=R247655

I managed to download the file, to extract the files, and then tried to run this file:
dell-inkjet-09-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb

Everything started fine but then I got an error message that a problem was encountered during installation. The text in the installer window is as copied below.

I thought, OK, there seems to be a problem about a blank line, so this is open source software, so maybe I can just find that line and edit it, so I tried opening it with gedit, which sounds like the right idea, but nothing happened.

So I am now appealing for help!

John

Hi jmontaguebaker, Welcome to LQ. Here is a link that may help correct this error, however, I would try searching the repositories or for the driver or setting up cups first. That driver appears to be from 2009 which would possibly make it obsolete.

http://archbird.blogspot.com/2012/04...g-lexmark.html

Good luck. ;-)

jmontaguebaker 04-03-2014 08:37 AM

great, but more problems

Thanks so much for that advice, Peacedog. I trawled around for a newer driver but couldn't find one, so I followed that link and managed to install the driver.

I then added the printer using System > Printing, and all that seemed to go through fine.

But then when I tried to print a test page I got the following error message:

Processing - /usr/dellinkjet/dell09/bin/printdriver failed

This started the printer troubleshooter, which eventually generated the debug report partly copied below (since it's too long to copy in its entirety - I could try to post a further reply with the full text if that would help), which I'm afraid means nothing to me. Any advice?

Thanks again for your help.

John

Do you have dlnet and dlusb backends for cups? There are some other ideas and options here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi....php?p=4452646

Good luck. ;-)

Problem resolved! (more or less)

Hi Peacedog, thanks again for your reply.

I checked those two files, seemed to be there and OK, and I looked at that link, which looked heavy going, but both were helpful for the following independent reasons.

1. First of all, it got me thinking that maybe my problem had to do with not having installed the latest versions of some things, so I opened the Update Manager and installed everything at levels 1 and 2 and everything else that had cups in the title. I guess I should have done that as soon as I had installed Linux but I was too green to realise.

2. Secondly, the linked page informed me indirectly that a Dell v313w = a Lexmark S305, so I looked for drivers for those and found some and installed those.

I think what happened next is that after (1) and before (2) I went through the Add Printer process and the computer discovered my printer under a different title ('Dell Network Backend #1'), which then installed fine.

Meanwhile, after (2), I had yet another printer installed automatically. So now my system shows up three printers (all physically the same one), two of which are working and one of which isn't.

I can scan from the machine, too, but only by direct connection and only to 'Simple Scan', so it's still not working 100% but I'll pursue that.

I have written all this out so that anyone else who searches for the same problem will have an idea how to solve it.

Incidentally, I also saw a discussion at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=148409 that said that Lexmark can be very helpful if you email them (I have done that to see if they have any advice about the scanner).

Thanks again,
John
