Install nVidia drivers? (Need Kernel source!)

Hi,

I wanted to install the new graphics driver for my nVidia card, but the setup said that no precompiled Kernel was found, so it wanted to compile one out of the kernel source (My kernel is 2.4.21-166-athlon). So, I downloaded one from rpmseek.com (for my SuSE 9, named kernel-source2.4.21-133-i586). After i had installed the source, the setup still refused to install the driver because some kernel source header file was missing and that i had to configure it properly before continuing.
Now, can anybody help me? Or at least say me where I can get a precompiled kernel from or how I can access the internet in runlevel 3?

The Kernel source should come with your SUSE distrubution! you only have to install it from the CD.

You should have a utility such as "Add/Remove applications" (Red Hat Linux).

Have a look around your menus.

If not just insert disk one of your SUSE distribution. It should load up with an option to install different things from the CD. In there somewhere there should be an option to install the kernel headers.

I Have never used SUSE only RED Hat and Mandrake and am assuming that the same facilities (or like facilities) are distributed with SUSE.

good luck

Well, that's the problem.
My Linux is from a computer magazine CD. So it just came with standard programs, like KDE, Gnome, and Openoffice. There wasn't even a c++ compiler! I had to download and install gcc separately, just like many other progs that should actually be in the distribution.
So there was just the kernel, and no sources or header files.
Can you tell me a site where I can download the 2.4.21-166-athlon kernel sources and headers?

ok, now I installed the kernel source, but the nvidia setup still says something like "kernel headerfile something.h missing". can I download them from anywhere, or have I done something wrong? I have installed the source from an rpm (2.4.21-133-i586, I couldn't find the athlon counterpart (2.4.21-166-athlon) with YaST.

Why don't you download the full version of a distro?

jax8 02-14-2004 08:58 PM

How many CD's did you get with the distribution?

Did you try inserting the first CD into the drive?

When it tells you these thing's, is it asking you for a yes/no answer? If it is click yes and it will dowload and compile it for you.
