install new software for redhat 7.2

I'm new to the linux world. I am trying to install other software onto my redhat 7.2 machine. i am able to use the command tar -xzvf and then all these words go up the screen. from there i don't know what to do. A faq told me to type in /confgure, make., make install. None of those commands work. can anyone help with some definitive answers.?

thanks,
newbie:smash:
