install linux headers

I am trying to do an apt install for linux headers to compile a driver for my nvidia card.

uname -r
linux 2.6.18-5

apt-get install linux-source-2.6.18

cd /usr/src

bzip2 -cd linux* | tar xvf -

ln -s linux-source-2.6.18 linux

apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.18-5 linux-headers-2.6.18-5-386

E: Couldn't find package linux-headers-2.6.18-5-386

what did i do wrong?

There seems to be no package called linux-headers- Isn't it enough without it, or would you need exactly that package? Did you try just "apt-get install linux-headers"?

You should be able to use
apt-cache search linux-headers
to see what's available, and then install one of the packages listed..
