Install Java (update to new version)

Thanks for all the help so far to everybody here.

When I java -version, I get java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 (Ubuntu 4.1.2-0ubuntu5)

apt-get update && apt-get install sun-java6-jre gives the result that 0 packages need to be updated or installed.

Any help?

If you are using Ubuntu you may need to enable commercial packages that are free in cost but not free as in FSF's definition of free.

Do this:
Run:
Code:
synaptic
Go to Settings -> Repositories and check all of the boxes.

sdexp,

All of the repositories are checked.

when I run sudo apt-get update && apt-get install sun-java6-jre

I get:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
sun-java6-jre is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

It's telling me that I have the latest version, but I don't.
