Install Fedora over Shrike
 

Four weeks ago was given 3 CD set for Linux Red Hat 9 (shrike) and have spent dozens of hours installing it and trying to get it connected to my P2P W98SE & W2K network and internet router.
I have sadly learnt it has been abandoned and replaced by a new Red Hat called Fedora Enterprise.
My local bookshop has, which includes 3CD's

Can I just install this over my Shrike with all its setups and continue to learn Linux. I sprcially liked Shrike as I could work in Windows all the time by trial and error as its Help file was pretty basic.
Have the IDG Bibles on other things and find them easy to read.

If you're happy with RH9 I say stick with it. Otherwise in terms of similarity you can expect to find most of Redhat specific features in Fedora, its more or less considered to be RH10.

Demonbane. Thanks for your reply, but what is the point of slugging it out to continue to learn RH 9 Shrike as it has been abandoned. There will be no more updates, particulartly the secutity ones.
I gather Fedora cannot be installed over RH9 Shrike so it means starting afresh ?
Is Fedora Enterprise a fully windows based system like RH9 Shrike ?

If you mean, does it have a GUI, yes, it is pretty much identical to RedHat in every way at this point, other than instead of "RedHat" things will say "Fedora"

The best way to do it would be to back up the files that you need and then start fresh, reformatting the partitions. When i installed Slack over Fedora, i had problems when i didn't format, so i would suggest just starting with fresh clean partitions.

First of all I don't think there's a Fedora Enterprise, the title of the book is probably refering to Fedora AND Redhat Enterprise Linux. Most of what you've learnt in RH9 still applies to Fedora. They will still provide security updates for RH9 until April, however this doesn't mean you can't do your own research and make your own updates, and there's also the Fedora Legacy Project which aims to provide security and bugfix updates for Redhat end of life products.

I'm not exactly sure whether you'll be able to upgrade from RH9 to Fedora, but I'd imagine you can, since I've heard ppl upgrading to Fedora just by using apt-get. The base layout of the 2 is very similar(if not the same), its just a matter of upgrading RPMs.

Yea Fedora does provide GUI configuration tools which were available in RH. However like any other distro, majority of them are designed to help you in doing basic configuration, if you want to fine tune your system and master Linux adminstration, you'll need to dig through config files yourself using the command line.
