Install Drivers

Can anyone tell me where i can find tutorials concerning to drivers installation in red hat 9, i need to learn how to install my hardware on red hat  , i have RH9 and i dont have internet nor sound, but i have the drivers for the sound card, and im pretty sure i can find something for my ethernet card 'cause is a 3com. But im thinking that if i start with the sound card, it would be more easy with the ethernet card. Thx :o

Hi,

Well I think the first place to go is to check if your hardware is supported or not. If it is supported by RH9 then most probably it will be detected at boot time or you can start the "kudzu" manually from a terminal window to start detecting the new hardware. If it couldn't detect then you need to install the driver manually. In this case if your driver is in source code you have to compile it yourself "gcc yourfilename.c -o yourfilename.exe".
If there were not any errors then you can execute it and install the driver. If your driver is an rpm package then you can type:
rpm -ivv yourpackage.rpm so it will install it.
If your hardware is not supported at all then you should prepare yourself for some headaches. May be you have to make the device files necessary for the hardware yourself(mknod ...) and set the IRQ,I/O Addresses and etc.

Hope it would be useful.
