install/configure kernel sources questions
 

Hi,

I'm trying to install the drivers for a wireless adaptor (D-Link 120d with Prism 2 chipset?? ) on my SuSE Personal 9.0. To do that, I need the "configured" kernel sources. I downloaded the kernel-sources-2.4.21-144.src.rpm from SuSE's ftp server. I put this file in my home directory, and rpm -Uvh 'ed the file, and I think it unpacked. (I see some files in /usr/src/packages/SOURCES). There are also a lot of .tar.bz2 files.

I need to know what to do now. Are the kernel sources configured? Do I need to unzip those other tar's? Is there a program or command I should run now to configure the kernel source tree? I've been searching for a while on the 'Net now, but have not been successful here.

till someone who uses rpm-based distros writes back ...

if you see a .bz2 file with the kernel descrip, then you will have to work on that. i believe "rpm -Uvh" on a source rpm goes and just unzips and places it in the right dir.

the kernel gets installed if you had done it on a binary rpm, not one which was src rpm.

look at the redhat.com manuals, or the kernel-howto on tldp.org.

i wouldnt suggest following what i said (but maybe da_one's cos his is tried n tested?) until you have gone thro either suse or redhat manuals for installing kernel from src rpm (it wont be much different, if at all, but i dont want you getting stuck someplace and having a headache.)

I I tried that tldp Kernel HOWTO earlier, but it's been removed for updating.

I don't know if I made it clear enough, I'm not trying to compile the kernel, I just need the kernel sources to install my device driver.

ok. where is your source tree? under /usr/src/ in a folder called linux?

what's there of my source tree, just what i rpm'd, is in a folder /usr/src/packages/SOURCES. It just got put there.

Also, there is no folder called /usr/src/linux. I have gathered from what I have read that this is created as a link at some stage in the process
