install cd-rom driver
Hi,
I was given this computer with Ubuntu already installed. The previous owner deleted private information. I think the cd-rom driver was accidentally deleted. I was told to install a driver from the Internet. I've tried, but I'm not having any luck. Today I updated to Ubuntu 11.10. Can anyone tell me how to install a cd-rom driver, in simple language? Thanks, Dave Pumphrey |
the cdrom drive is probably just dead. ubuntu would have done the necessary things for the drive to work.

How do I resurrect a cd_rom driver?

I've never ever needed to install a CD-ROM driver in Linux. The Linux kernel contains all the necessary software to dealwith CD-ROMs and CD-ROM drives. Did you upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 using a CD (in the CD-ROM drive)? If so, then the drive obviously works. What happens when you insert a CD? If you go into your BIOS, is the drive detected OK?
