install 2 nic, 3 show up ?

I've installed the same system with red hat 8.0 and Mandrake 9.0, and run into the same problem on both systems. If I install 2 nic's, three show up. If I install 1, 2 show up. Is this normal, I looked in a book and did a little searching, but can't find anything about it.
I'm thinking it might have something to do with my hardware, the pmcia slots on this old dell optiplex gxi aren't integrated into the mobo, they are on a separate "wall," which slides into it's own slot on the mobo.
It's not causing any problems, I'm just trying to figure it out.

Wow 3 nic cards for the price of 2. What a deal! Ummm...check your bios. Sometimes the bios trys to do things that Linux should be in charge of.

I don't think it's the BIOS, it doesn't even recognise the CD rom drive (it's old), and I dont' see any options for ethernet cards.
