I'm puzzled about the firmware. Never had to do that for my HP 1022. And--there is nothing in the Arch repos that looks like HP firmware.

It should be part of the foo2zjs package. If it is up to date, then the path shown here -

should have the file sihp1020.dl
if not, then see if there is an update.

If you install HPLIP (or anything) using the package manager, the dependencies should be taken care of automatically. Tell exactly what you did and what is missing. Assuming you are using the package manager, have you synced up (refreshed) the repositories?

I'm not sure why you are trying to compile the hplip driver. This is not listed as supporting your printer.
From what you said earlier

If you have this driver, you should have the fireware, somewhere. It all depends where it was installed.
Try to find it using the locate command. Open a konsole, and get root privileges. Run the command ( as root ) 'updatedb'. The first time it runs will take some time. You are building a database of all files on the system. Once that completes, run the command 'locate sihp1020.dl' If you have the file, the path to the file will list on the konsole. If there is no output, then you do not have the file. You can try to locate the directory foo2zjs also, that will show up if you have that driver installed.
The hplip driver should be available from the repos for PCLinux.

Hmmm,
I see you installed this from an rpm file. It did create the firmware directory

So, I guess the challenge here is where do we find the firmware? I will do a little googling and see what I can turn up. I suspect that is all you need now.

After doing some more scratching around, I saw two things to follow up on. First of all, this comment on the driver web page.

The last line, there are some README files in the above directory listing. Look through those for any instructions on using this driver.
The "fireware". I think there is a typo on the printing.org web page. I think the name of the file you are looking for is 'sihp1020.dll' this is a windows driver file, ( I think, at least it is a windoze .dll file ). I would think you would have a CD ( or floppy ) with the windoze drivers on it. Or even a windoze system wiht the driver installed. Look in those sources for the fireware file. If you can find it, just copy it to the /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/ directory, and re-try the command to load the driver. Watch the path, it has to match.

I've just checked my home system and it is running the Gutenprint driver for my HP 1022---so this might be something to try. (There should be a Gutenprint package available using your package manager.

I was using Debian lenny till now. Printer installation is painless in that by following the instructions on
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ but in this case I have spent a lot of time over the installation. Now I think there is only one option to dump PCLinux and return to Debian id awtting up printer fails.
