insmod error, bad EIP value, gimp

I have a couple of things to ask about.

On booting I see a message which says something like "insmod error. Hint: insmod errors can be caused by ? parmeters."

It goes very fast so I can't read it.

On logging off, it goes fine with lots of OKs, then stops and says "bad EIP value"..
I searched google and got some info about APM being enabled or not.

Are these two things related? Do I need to do anything about them.

I wanted to have a play with the Gimp, but when the windows come up the writing is in symbols so I can't figure out what to do. I guess a setting needs to be changed?

I have Mandrake 9.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
