Inserting Pcmcia nic card not picked up after system is running but does on boot up

I am running mepis 8. I am new to linux. When my system boots up my belkin networking card is recognized and works fine, but if I forget to put it in and have already booted up my system and then insert it, it will not see it. The only way I can get it to work is to reboot my system with it inserted. Any suggestions to fix this where it will recognize it whenever I insert it. Thanks

does running depmod -a as root fix the problem?

what does depmod -a do exactly? It works to rediscover it, but I have to type it in then insert the card. Do you know of any way or setting that it can be fixed just to automatically pick it up without having to type something in everytime? Thanks
