insert mode in gedit

how do I get to insert mode in gedit? Why is there no documentation to do this? My Gedit comes up in overlay mode.

Gedit is automatically in "insert" mode I believe.

Are you trying to edit a readonly file?

My experience with gedit has been the same as szboardstretcher's and I could find nothing in gedit's preferences for toggling between insert and overwrite mode.

Have you checked the hardward insert key on your keyboard?

On my system, pressing the 'Insert' key toggles between INS & OVR modes.
