Ink-jet Photo printer...
Hi all,
Thanks for all your help. I now have Simple Mepis 6.5 up and running well, discovered how to install a few programs... Has Linux will now do my raw file photo editing, it might be time to replace my old printer. I'm thinking along the lines of an Epson R360 or other 6 colour photo printer, it would be very good if I could find something that is well supported in the driver department, to get the best out of it.. Any ideas?? kind regards Mel. |
Epson Ink-jets are (IMHO) the first choice for photo printing---AND they are well-supported by Linux. In particular, I have been pleasantly surprised how will the GIMP print system works with may faithful Photo 900 (Little-known cousin to the venerable 1280/1290). Plus GIMP has a plug-in for checking nozzles, cleaning, etc.
I just checked the database on my (not totally current) Ubuntu install, and the R320 and R340 are there. I doubt that you would have any trouble finding a driver. You can check here: (Gimp-print is now called "Gutenprint) http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ |
HP is widely supported as well.

Surf to OpenPrinting (follow the link in my sig) and do some research into what printers are supported before you buy. Epson is a pretty good brand, but not everything is well supported. Most of their printers are supported by Gutenprint or other free drivers, but not all. Epson also offers their own drivers (again, linked in my sig), but they can be a nightmare to get working, especially on Debian/Ubuntu and 64 bit systems. It's best to go with something that's listed as having good free driver support.

From what I have read and studied, this is my bias (It is informed bias, but I would have a hard time proving it)
