What is the exact wording of the error message, if any?

This looks relevant: http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74...lure-initramfs

Smile initramfs

These are the words before the initramfs;

Give up waiting for root device. common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-check rootdelay = (did the system wait long enough?)
-check root = (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! UUID=3bc8941a-9c1c-41c7-ae09-f5b21c987f9 does not exist. Dropping to a Shell!

BusyBox V1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

that's a very radical error, considering it was working before.
is this a normal hard drive install? dual booting?
what sort of upgrade did you make?

In short, it means it cannot find your root partition/drive. It could help if you posted some more specific info.
Is it dual boot
Is grub on the same drive as root partition
How exactly is your partitions scattered over drives

It seams either your root partition is missing or corrupted or drive failed.
I have very limited knowledge on init ramfs but giving as much info possible can help someone help you.
