(initial) software update error in Xubuntu 16.04 - applies to all methods to update
Hi, I have a fresh Xubuntu 16.04 install. Upon trying the first update, first via apt-get, then Ubuntu Update Manager and also Synaptic, I am getting some type of input/output error concerning /usr/bin and some other jargon (see screenshot and text that's attached). One side note, even with no successful package cache being built, I can still install software fine.
I really in all the many times of using Ubuntu and its variants, this is a new one on me.
So what I found was the problem was ultimately Gnome Software Center, but furthermore was the program "appstream" and its dependencies of which Gnome Software utilizes. So, I just uninstalled appstream and libappstream3, which required Gnome Software to be removed. Thus, once they were gonna, updating and upgrading via apt-get worked like a charm. And yes, the kernel was updated as well in addition to the hundreds of other packages needing updates. Thanks for your help though.
