Red face Information on external hard drive is unreadable

Hi all!
Before loading Ubuntu we put all my information on an external hard drive. Now, when I plug in the external hard drive it is recognized but claims it is unreadable, that I am not the owner & therefore don't have permission to access or the permission to change the permissions. Please help me get my data back. The windows half of my computer is not even recognizing the external hard drive so I can't find another solution.

1. What is the filesystem of the external hard drive? If it is EXT2 or 3, you might want to try downloading the filesystem reader for windows of ext filesystems here: www.fs-driver.org

2. I have never used Ubuntu, but is it possible to switch user in Ubuntu to Root, which would give you permissions, and then read the information off the drive that way?

Good luck, and welcome to Linux

Please tell exactly how you "put all my information on an external hard drive." (How was the drive partitioned and formatted, what program was run to "put" the "information" on the disk, how was the transfer verified, etc.)

Can you open a terminal window in Ubuntu and show us the output of the command sudo fdisk -l /dev/sd? (where the character after the dash is the letter "el" and the question mark - the "wild card" character - is part of the command)? That command should list the partitions and partition types of all the hard drives connected to your computer. (Um, that is with the external HD connected to the Ubuntu system.) Also, plese show us the output produced by the mount (no arguments) command.

Note: It is possible to run Ubuntu as "root," but doing so is strongly discouraged by the Ubuntu developers because of the inherent security risks in so doing. It is also not likely to be needed to solve your problem.
