Information on a connectedexternal HDD

Hi,

In my haste in finally making the big step from OSX I plugged in a HDD and started Backup. I've tried the big step before but for one reason or another always had to go back to OSX.

How do I now find out how big that HDD I plugged in is please?

I know that I should have checked all this before but.........

Thanks in advance, I can't find the answer on your site nor on the Internet.

Google your disk model?

GUI ?. Right click on the disk and (probably) "Properties".
CLI ?. "lsblk" and look for type "disk".

Hi & WELCOME BACK to LQ! I have a few thoughts to offer... 'ForWhatIt'sWorth' ;)
IF you still have the "old MacBook Pro" with Ubu, from 1.1yr ago
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...kes-4175571653
it might be interesting to TRY plugging it in there, to do fdisk/lsblk like above (+1 #3).

Yes, backups are -GOOD-! Be careful (even experienced people have accidentally overwritten wrong drive)!

One way ['safe&easy'] to 'fully run' Linux ON-top of OSX is VirtualBox.
This allows you to experiment, while still having a running web-browser, to web-search.
(A 'plug' for web-searching any&all things!)
OSX isn't as '....' as M$/Win10, so -I- wouldn't be in such a hurry to get rid of it ;)
And OSX 'has/is' 'Unix' (I exaggerate): try a *WEB-SEARCH* of:
Quote:

osx fdisk external disk
Update: OSX appears to call it `diskutil list`, per this 1st result.

ENJOY! Looking forward to hearing how your Linux 'journey' goes! Best wishes always.

Yes right click on Properties = OK

Thanks syg00,

Adding "Free Space" and "Used" gives you a rough idea of what you have plugged in.

I was trying to find the equivalent of OS "Disk Utilities", old habits die hard!

While I'm on the subject, having worked for years in computing I am therefore very wary of losing data. Does anyone have a recommendation for a second type of backup that I can run alongside "Backup"? I was using CCC in OSX but even though I cried on the shoulder of www.Bombich.com they wouldn't make a Linux version for me!
