Increasing virtual address space

I use the flight simulation program X-Plane with Mepis since it was ported to Linux on the release of ver 8. It runs fine until I use some very memory-hungry photographic scenery. The developer of the photographic scenery is trying to help me, but he has no experience of Linux. However he has suggested that the cause of the problem is insufficient virtual address space ...

"The reason for your crash is that Windows and Linux are limited to 2GB of virtual address space per process, no matter how much physical memory is intalled. On some versions of Windows (namely XP Pro, 2000 DataCentre Edition and Server 2003 - but no other versions) you can change this limit to 3GB per process. Apparently it can be changed on Linux too but I've no idea how - perhaps you could enquire at your favourite Linux forums and let me know the outcome."

Can one of the experts out there tell me how I can increase the amount of virtual address space ?

It sounds like the programmer might be too extravagant. Unless you really do have 2-3GB of physical RAM, this program is going to thrash itself to pieces. The programmer could be more selective about what image-data he loads into virtual memory...
