Increasing the screen resolution

Hi All

First of all Im using Ubuntu (Kbuntu).

When trying to increase screen resolution the GUI doesn't give me an option to go a higher than 1024x768, I am running an iNvida 7900gt so it should be able to handle a higher rez. My question is how do i get the GUI to display higher resolutions or could I do it via the command line

Thanks

Probably need to define the monitor specs in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If unsure then post contents of that file, the monitor brand and model and specs from the manual horizontal and refresh specs, and what you want. I assume you are using the latest nvidia drivers from their site?

Note if you try this first make a backup copy of your xorg.conf in the event something is incurately edited you can at least restore the orginal xorg.conf file.

From where are you trying to increase the resolution?

Try increasing the resolution from the nvidia display settings which would have got installed when you've have installed your graphics card driver.
Because if you are trying to increase the resolution from the hardware->screen resolution, then it would only show the default supported resolutions!
And its worth mentioning that you should change the resolution as root! or else whenever the next time you restart your system the resolution will get reverted to default, and that is 1024*768 in you case!

Adding wanted resolutions to /etc/X11/xorg.conf should help.

Thanks for the replys
I edited the xorg.conf file and added the rez 1280x1024, and rebooted the pc which works fine except for an error when starting up, something about the GNOME deamon not starting correctly, is this something to be worried about as it is using the rez I added to the xorg.comf file.
