Increasing font size in console
I have searched various forums and google re. font sizes but cannot find the answer.
I am using ubuntu lucid.as a desktop and don't run a server. The editor I use is vim so increasing font by edit > profile preferences. What I need to know is how to increase the size in console ie. when I use Ctrl +Alt + F1 to F6 . On running xrandr I get this : laptop:~$ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 4096 x 4096 LVDS-1 connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm 1680x1050 60.1*+ 60.0 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 59.9 1280x960 59.9 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 59.9 800x600 59.9 640x480 59.4 720x400 59.6 640x400 60.0 640x350 59.8 VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) TV-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) I know that,the graphical user interface ( using X windows , I think ) sits on top of the base system ie F1 to F6 . In the Fs , xrandr replies "Can't open display ". The question is am I right in thinking that "gui" is totally independant of the base ( is that the correct word ?). I have read that messing about with resolution can wreck a monitor ( I'm using a laptop) , is there a safe way to proceed ? |

increasing font size in console
Many thanks corp769 for your prompt response and my sincere apologies for my
belated reply. I couldn't relate to your link , but found another one :- http://www.linuxconfig.org/change-tt...ole-resolution As I'm using ubuntu 10.04 this was more appropriate. The result after using "nomodeset" was a total distortion of the GUI , although the console was OK. So I've reverted to the original , I'll leave sleeping dogs lie. Many thanks again, lwv962. |
The links are pretty much explaining the same thing. Can you explain in more detail what you mean by "total distortion" of the GUI? Thanks.

Everything was distorted and blurred : desktop icons , top bar , bottom bar ,terminal and windows ;but
as I said now it's all back to normal , I'll leave it as it is. Thanks again, lwv962 |
Have you tried setting your resolution to something different?
