In ubuntu, my executable script wont run by clicking on it

I placed the script on the desktop.
If I click on it it opens in gedit.
right click shows no run option.

So I open a terminal and cd Desktop.
Then I type ./ and it runs.

Go to files | preferences I think. Under one of the tabs should be an option to tell how to open executable files.
