in ubuntu-8.04 .apt gives error to install msttcorefonts
I had copied desired debian files of ubuntu-restricted-extras to /var/cache/apt/archive . So that offline install is possible
But msstcorefonts package involced downloading some exe files while my computer is networkless so during installation it gave error . Now i ran Code:
# apt-get install msttcorefonts Code:
# apt-get remove msttcorefonts Code:
# apt-get -f install #apt-get check does not report error. Usually i have seen that if computer finds the file it has to download in current folder then it uses them , like I keep 26104-700.zip in same folder while installing amrnb-7.0.0.2.tar.bz2 but in case of installing msttcorefonts it did not look in current folder ( which was /var/cache/apt/archives) for .exe files. |
If possible, connect to the internet and try "apt-get install --reinstall msttcorefonts"
|
Also, unless you are logged in as root, you need to prefix commands with "sudo". This gives the installer/package manager permission to install packages.

My machine does not have internet connection that is the crux of problem.

Apt may not recognize the file(s) you *just* inserted into it... soo.. you need to delete the pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin from the /var/cache/apt directory..
This will *make* apt re-read it's database correctly and include the file(s) you manually put in it-- behind it's back ;) However, if apt still needs to dl some other stuff.. then without a net connection.. I don't think there would be any easy way around it.. unless you can get the package(s) from another pc or source. |
sorry.. I am trying to delete a double post :(

I deleted pkgcache.bin & srcpkgcache.bin & APT remade them but still whenever I install or remove anything it says
1 package not properly installed or removed I also tried apt-get --reinstall msttcorefonts I got E:invalid operation msttcorefonts ALso apt-get --reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras gave E:invalid operation ubuntu-restricted-extras |
ok well there are several other linux package manangers that might help.. have you tried aptitude yet?
aptitude -f install (this will tell you if there are packages that are incomplete, or need dependencies. See what it says... sometimes one package manager will see and fix things that others will not. dselect is another one. kpackage has some of the good switches available and working on version 3.5.9 But with kpackage you will need to select the deb package separately.. in other words, copy it from your cache to your desktop or where ever, and use kpackage to install it.. when you get to the install screen you will see several switches which allow you to over ride dependencies, etc... select the ones you might find interesting. Of course you could do the same on the command line, but kpackage (at least this older version) seem to work pretty smoothly when I am having a hard time with apt, and don't want to experiment and re-read the man page for the millionth time. I would first totally remove the offending file (program) (ie. purge) and then start from scratch. Running aptitude -f install several times.. to see if anything else is possibly causing you problems. |
purge & aptitude options did not work .
Seems I have to get dselect or kpackage. That didn't help either. The good thing is In ubuntu 10.04 when you install ubuntu-restricted-extras & for some reason if system cannot get desired exe files , still the APT does not crash instead it politely suggests Code:
#dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer That's all. Problem Let us say in ubuntu 8.04 this problem seems to have no solution for offline computer. It is just that system needs exe which it is hell-bent on getting from internet , so bad for networkless computer. Only if I could fool the apt to indicate a local exe as REQUIRED_link_ address ? |
