in need of Booting my live Server

Hi all

Just some few questions as am Using a Linux Debian with Kernel Version 2.6.26 - amd64 and am running a mobile money application on it , since then my RAM is been almost use and am still having no enough RAM to Support some Application. i have Purchased a New RAM 8Gig to add on to my Live Server to make all this application run properly this was in terms of add more memory on my server. my question was , since i have never or Switch it of or not upgraded this OS due to fear of Incompatibility with the Mobile Money Application, if i switch of this server to install Upgrade RAM to affect it , what are the ways to do this ? can any body show me the way to do this step by step to get read of Boot failure , or prevent any problem from boot failure.

Unless you know more about your system we could only guess an answer.

First find out if the server supports live memory add maybe.

To shut down a system one tends to properly stop applications. Database and some other apps may require detailed knowledge to correctly stop it.

Then one does a normal shutdown via some command or gui.

Then to power up you'd reverse the process. Again noting that some apps may need special steps to properly start them.

It may be possible to simply add more swap space but we also don't know what is going on. If this system has run properly for 5 years and never shut down, I'd think it should power back up. Be sure to make a backup of the data before you attempt this.
