In need of BASIC Mandrake Linux 9 Tutorial...

I am new to Linux and I know NOTHING! I don't even know how to adjust the system volume... I need a step-by-step Linux guide. Could anyone please help me join the Linux world? My biggest problem is trying to install downloaded programs (ie - Open Office, etc.) I haven't a clue. Thank You.
