Impossible to open a terminal window in Gnome

After a cleaning of some software from my ubuntu (Jaunty) desktop I am no longer able to open a terminal window in Gnome.
I tried to reinstall gnome terminal from synaptic but this made no difference...
In the command line that you get with Alt-F2 I tried the code: man ls
and a terminal window opens but after exiting the man page (q) it disappears!
What about?
Thanks for any help

The man experiment shows that a terminal program is working. Try running gnome-terminal from the F2 window, to see if gnome-terminal is working. Or try leaving the man page open and running ps -ef | grep erm from another F2 window.

Welcome to LQ

Did you also installed gnome-terminal-data?

Thank you catkin and repo: gnome-terminal works: I get a "stable" terminal window.

Now the pity is having to type Alt-F2 and then the command gnome-terminal to get a terminal open....

To repo: yes, I have gnome-terminal-data installed.

How are the properties set for the icon to open the terminal ?
right click on the icon

Running "man ls" from the run command dialog (Alt+F2) should never leave the terminal open after pressing Q, as there would be no process running. (Man would exit and you would not be able to do anything.)

What occurs when you try to start it from the Applications Menu?

the command was konsole so I changed it to gnome-terminal and now the icon works.
It just remains to me the curiosity to know why the konsole command doesn't work (it worked for months!)

Ciao and thanks,

Is konsole installed ?
AFAIK konsole is a KDE app

You are right, I have just realized konsole went uninstalled together with the old software I cleaned off and, yes, it is the KDE terminal emulator.
Thank you again!
