Importing favourites from IE
 

Hello,

I've got opensuse10.2, dual booting with windowsXP pro.

Is there anyway I can import the favourites from Windows Internet explorer, into firefox?

Hi sipickles,

surely there is (or at least during Ubuntu's installation you can choose to import a lot of stuff, including browser bookmarks, from an existing Windows installation if it detects one). I haven't used IE for a while so I'm counting "Favourites" means the same thing as "Bookmarks". Anyway, in Firefox there's in the bookmarks menu an entry that lets you edit or organize your bookmarks. In that window (or rather in it's menu) there is a menu entry "import" -- like it says, with it you can import bookmarks from an existing installed program (I'm not sure if that finds your Explorer, so that might not work) or from a file. If Explorer is able to export the favourites/bookmarks into a file, then you could just copy that file and use Firefox's import to read it. I'm confident this is possible (because it sounds stupid if you couldn't export them into a file, for backing them up for example).

This is quite an old release. I wrote a better version since then (works from Linux as well as Cygwin), so if you are interested and you have trouble with this one, don't hesitate: tell me, and I'll do my best to package the current better version.

I am also a newbie, and after reading this post and a bit of trials was able to do this.

From Windows IE6 SP2 to Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.8

1) File menu --> Import and Export --> Export Favourites --> Choose the default "Favourites" folder --> Chhoose Radio button to export to a file.

2) Copy that file to your Linux server.

3) On Firefox, Bookmarks menu --> ( it opens a new window ) Bookmark Manager

4) On the new window --> File --> Import --> Choose your file you copied ( it would be a html tag file with .htm extension )

Of course in last 6 months you must have done it a million times now :-)
