Lightbulb Important apt-fast over apt-get

I installed and ran this script called apt-fast it uses axel a download accelerator ...

I tested it on seamonkey which was 48mb in size

Apt-get downloaded it and installed it in 48 seconds ruffley ...

Apt-fast downloaded it and installed it in 11 to 12 seconds....

I got this file downloaded in about 4 times the speed of regular apt-get..

This I believe is the original post and makers of apt-fast

APT-FAST

We need one of you math whizzes to give it a go and give use exact numbers..

Factors to consider are: internet bandwidth, cpu, ram ....

I believe the install times will be the same do to read and write times on hard drive....

here is a easy way to install if using Debian/Ubuntu/LinuxMint or any Debian based distro

Apt-fast install instructions youtube video...

This rocks ;p

Haven't tried it but it looks pretty cool.

Sounds good, have to admit, but after a first try I found out something odd: having updated package lists and running 'upgrade', it first downloaded the packages, then asked if I wanted to upgrade them. Not much of importance usually, but if for some reason there was a big amount of packages to update and after getting the list I wouldn't want to upgrade them, it would have downloaded the packages already. Could be a problem sometimes...that can be get around by doing a "dry run" before the actual operation, but that's a waste of time and would pretty much make the tool useless.

The idea behind it is good, at least with a fast connection that is charged monthly, not based on amount of downloaded data. Thanks for the link.

Doubtful, wget is well maintained, while axel is buggy.

Another funny unimportant piece of information..if there are no updates, it still says

Quote:
Done! Verify that all packages were installed successfully.
Easy task, as no packages were installed
