Are you trying to set up a mail server and you are trying to figure out which ones work?

As a mail user, I like using IMAP because it only downloads the mail headers. In other words, it does not actually download the email or the attachments. It leaves it on the mail server for you to retrieve later. If you use POP, then it will download all your messages and attachments locally on your computer. I would guess the disadvantage of using IMAP with any mail server is that it would probably take up a lot of hard drive space since user's mail are stored on the IMAP server.

I don't use Dovecot but it looks like just mail server programs. Mutt is a text-based mail reader. I don't use it, but I would figure it's lightweight and simple to use.
