You could start by reading the LQ Rules.

Then read 'Slackware® Essentials' or 'Slackware® Basics' to get some back ground information.

thanx guys. I don't know. What can I do? I am in school for programming but they aren't teaching us anything yet. My brother in law told me to install slackware and mess around. But I don't get to talk to him that much. I have been clicking on things in my system but I guesse I just need to read. I am really looking for a total noob starter guide. How to setup internet security, commonly used programs and applications etc

Incidentally, that means learning the cmd line (aka terminal or xterm) environment. Should be avail somewhere on your menus.

Hello and good day. There's a lot of good readables in /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs. When I started using slackware, I did nothing but read the docs in there. The slack book is also not a bad start. I should have learned slackware quicker if I knew the book earlier.

I don't know where are the best tutorials about programming. Maybe there are some good start in /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs.. Of course most are also found in the net.. but all i can say is that you should try to learn by practice and not by memorizations. Think of a project immediately even though you don't know what to do and try building your own programs yourself. A good reference after some basic tutorial is all that you'll need .. i guess.

Get a good C intro from the library

Well, my 1st 2 links will teach you Bash shell programming.
For Perl see: http://perldoc.perl.org/, note the tutorials option in the topleft menu list.

Basically just try all the examples (or your own ideas) until you get stuck then post a new qn (with your code) and show what you've got so far.

Ps: also, as I mentioned, a good way to learn (in this case programming) is to try and answer/understand Q & As in the Programming forum here at LQ.
