I've tried fedora distros in the past but eventually just gave up because I could never find a modem to work with my system. I bought some that were supposedly Linux compatible but were never noticed or found on installation.
Also other than surf the web I like to back up movies with DVDShrink. maybe it will run under WINE have no idea.
So I have a distro of Ubantu that I got months ago and am tempted to give it a try. Is this going to be another no modem found type of headache? Guess I'll find out.
Question if I ever get DSL out here in the boonies are there carriers that have software that works with Linux or is there software that runs on linux to fool the dsl modem? And is it possible to back up my movies with out re-writing the kernel :) thanks ya'll...Roger

how can we tell if you if a modem will work without telling what it is? a hardware modem is always the best option. connecting to a serial port it *will* work, being a USR modem or 3com or such. check linmodems.org for general compatability for software modems. as for dvdshrink, I've no idea what it specifically does, but there are plenty of optiosn to rip dvd's undefr linux natively and much faster than the average windows kit.

Thanks, Yeah I know a hardware modem with a real uart will work, but they are expensive and as I said I hope to get DSL eventually, so the $100 modem will be obsolete. I am willing to buy a software modem if it will work, so far I have bought two modems that the vender said was Linux compataable, but that was not the case. Good to hear that Ican rip dvds under Linux I soooooooo want to get away from windows... thanks
