IDE errors when trying to run live cd or install kubuntu 6.10

I am a total newbie to Linux & trying to install it for the first time...

I downloaded and burnt the "kubuntu-6.10-desktop-amd64.iso" a couple of weeks ago and successfully ran it from the CD. I decided to install it onto my second hard drive this week & suddenly find that it keeps freezing.
I read on a forum to remove the 'quiet' and 'splash' parameters from the boot options & keep seeing various ide errors flash by ending with ide: failed opcode was: unknown
After a second or so it moves on to display <o> Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
And then it freezes and I have to perform a shut down by cutting power (holding power button in).

I am not sure what information you will need to help me, but my PC is
AMD 64 3200 +
1024 MB RAM
ATI express 200 graphics
200 GB SATA hard drive
80 EIDE hard drive (empty)
2 x DVD +/- RW drives

Thanks, in advance for any advice?

I've encountered similar errors on a certain desktop that I thought to be as compatible as a pc could be. The same install/live-cd disc of Kubuntu 6.10 worked flawlessly on a few other computers, but this certain pc just refused to boot, or if it booted it crashed occasionally, froze and what's more important, when I tried to install the system (I know it only takes something like 15 mins) to see if it worked better from the harddisk, the installation never accomplished successfully.

After quite a lot of tries I ended up with the conclusion that some part of the hardware didn't work with this distribution, and as I didn't have much time to investigate it, I just left it uninstalled.

My advices are, unless you figure out something more clever, to try the alternate install disc and see if the harddisk-installed version works better; the alternate disc has some benefits in the installation compared to the regular one (more options, mainly), so you might be able to install that. If it fails, try some other distribution.

As a sidenote, I tried Knoppix live-cd with the very same pc and it worked flawlessly. Kernel versions weren't exactly the same, so it might be that. Or something else.

thanks for the reply bouncer - I have been thinking of trying what you suggested.

The on thing that puzzles me is the fact that it worked 2 weeks ago & now it doesnt!!
