Unhappy Icons in KDE

As a to Linux I'm having some problems assigning icons to applications. I've installed Mandrake 10.1 and downloaded the Firefox browser as an RPM package which I was able to install in my home area. The applications runs under KDE3.2 OK, but I don't know how to establich an icon for the desktop on which I can click to invoke it. Clearly icons are possible because for other applocations such as Shell or Konqueror they're on the panel and others such as Home are on the desktop. Can you help?

Right click the desktop Icon and select properties.
The Icon will appear in large format, simply click on it, and all the icons that KDE knows of will appear. They're grouped by type. Change the type to Applications and there should be a Firefox Icon in there.

I think he is looking to add an application...

Right click on the Desktop. Select:

Create New >> File >> Link to Application

Change the Name and Icon for the link in "General" Tab

Click the "Application" Tab:

Add Discription and Comment if you want... Under "Command" add:

Thats It...

Thanks guys! I followed the second method and it now works just fine .However, all the software is in ":/home/david/firefox-installer" directory and not "/usr/bin/firefox" as the reply suggests it ought to be. Should I create this directory and move all the files across (and remake the icon link) or would that fail because the equivalent of the windows registry needs changing? If so, is there some equivalent of "uninstall" to get rid of my current unconventional installation so that I can then try to install it in the right place this second time round. Sorry about all these queries, it's my first time out with Linux .........
