Icon Positions

Hi, Ive decided to give Linux a try and im very impressed. Im running Mandrake 9.1 I have a slight problem with my icons. I move them around to the places i want them, but when i restart KDE or reboot, the icons go all over the place.

Any ideas?

Anyone have any ideas how i can fix this?

most of mdk icons must be placed in
/usr/share/icons (hicolor, locolor, ...)
or
/usr/local/kde/share/icons

Yeah, ive had a look and they are all in there. Although, the icons position is still not saved. Is there a command line that i can enter to "aline to grid"? If so then i'll just run that command each time at boot up.

If you right-click the desktop you can align the icons vertically, horizontally or to the grid from the context menu. For the icons which are always on the desktop (home directory, the CD ROMs and ZIP, trash) the positions are then saved; but for instance the icon of gtkam (for the digital camera) which only 'comes into being' when the camera is connected, is always off center to the left.

yeah those icons always show up in the correct place, its all the other icons that ive made which dont. Everytime i restart there are some overlapping and they are all to the left. I cant figure it out, ive been at it for a while now.

Ok, I finally figured it out!

If anyone else ever has this problem on Mandrake 9.1 and KDE 3.1, just do the following.

-Open a terminal.
-enter the Desktop (~/Desktop)
-Go back to your Desktop in KDE and arrange them how you want it.
-Click on the terminal
-Delete the file called ".Documents" (rm .Documents)

Thats all, it will recreate the .Documents file with the new icon positions.

Restoring icon positions easily

Hi

The problem I'm having, is that my icons are easily messed up when changing resoulutions and switching monitors I thought it would be useful if I could save the Icon postions then restore them later to save time. I was wondering if you might know how to do this? btw I checked my Desktop folder and found there to be no .Documents file in KDE 3.2 and I did have "Show hidden files" enabled.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks
