.ICEauthority could not be updated in LM 17.2

This message shows up every time I boot LM 17.2. I have dual boot with win 7. and sometimes I access files on the win desktop from LM (Drives, 300GB, [username] desktop) Could that be the problem?

The message box gives the option to logout, then LM immediately logs itself back in and I can log in normally.

I have researched this issue some and some say
- reformat home drive
- reinstall (which is the same as the above I assume)
- some say change permissions with chmod and chown

I encrypted my home drive when I installed. I don't know if that is the problem.

I don't yet feel confident in making changes at the terminal without expert advice because making a mistake here can cause things like
1. making all files into executables or
2. giving everyone and his cat access to my files.

I would like to know the reason for this problem. If possible. I can reformat or reinstall or both if necessary.

any help appreciated.
