We can help, but you will need to supply some information.

What model of Think-pad is this? Turn it up side down, on the bottom there will be a sticker with the machine type and complete model information. Please post that information. IBM has online documentation, so if we have the machine type and model info, we can look up what type of sound card you have.

Another way to try and find out is, open a window, and run the command '/sbin.lspci' ( without the quotes ) and post the results.

Why FC2? That is very old, i believe FC is at FC8 right now. Old distros may be difficult to find correct drivers for things like the sound card. Newer distros do a much better job of detecting hardware and installing drivers. Consider going with a recent distro.

This is an IBM Thinkpad it is a 390e. The sound card shows it as being an
Vendor: ESS Technology
Model: ES1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive
Module: snd-es 1938
Maybe you can also help me out. I know that is an old distro but that is what came with it.
I don't have the bios password. Do you know how to retrieve it.
thanks

I think I can find out, if you need the BIOS password.

Is the sound driver loaded? To find out, open a konsole, and run the command '/sbin/lsmod | grep snd' run the command without the quotes.

If it is loaded, you should see several lines reported. Copy and paste the output here.

Have you opened a mixer to verify sound is not muted? or volume turned up? Some distros mute it when first installed.

I went to the Lenovo site. To get any information on the BIOS, I need the machine type and model. It is on the sticker on the bottom The machine type is a 4 digit field like 2624 or 2626. The model is a 3 digit field, there are way too many to list here.

Here is the link.

If you post the information, then we can find more information on the hardware.

IBM BIOS passwords aren't all that easy to crack. You need to get the password from the seller ASAP.

Look here for a DIY:

WARNING: You could trash your laptop doing the things described in the link.

Another option?

If sound is intermittent, it's most likely a setup issue and not a driver.

So you can play MP3s or whatever, but you can't stream directly from the CD? Is that what you're saying?

thanks every one who replied. I got the sound working. thanks again.

For completeness, could you post what you did to get your sound working?

tleeonly 04-12-2008 09:29 AM

Well what I did was go into the mixer and moved the sliders up where it said cd. I am not smarter than a fifth grader.
