i686 vs i386 instruction architecture

I have a p3 laptop I want to put linux on. the only arch release in the distro I want is labeled as "i386". Is this what I want for my p3?

I'm assuming i686 is a superset of the i386 architecture and I'm all set. Right? And x86 refers to my p3 as well then, x being {i3, i4, i5, i6, ...} ?

yes, you'll want to put either the x86 or i386 architecture on a PIII
