i686 Question.
What type of a PC is i686 Computer ? Please give full details.
Thanks. Vijay  |
Simply one of the newer processors. i386 (I believe is an early pentium), i486, 586 later models. And an i686 is more recent. This also covers Athlons - I have had a year old Athlon come up as an i686.
Why? Is this for a project? |

From here and other sites: i686 => Pentium Pro/II/III
So I was not entirely correct. I found it on Google by doing a search for "i686 processor intel" What is your processor? |
Hi,
Doesn't particularly matter what speed the processor is just make sure it is a PII or above or a AMD Athlon. It should be OK as long as the processor is less than about 4 years old. NOTE: The i386 and i486 are NOT early pentiums. The first pentium PI was also known as an i586 Stv T |
I stand corrected. The problem is that there is so much conflicting info out there.

My PC is IBM Aptiva E-Series 140, 333MHz Purchased around July 1999. Please let me know if this will be OK. Thanks.

Are there any web-sites in this regard that can clarify this ? Thanks.

If it is a Pentium or Celeron processor a 333mhz is an i686. If it is a AMD K6II it is not a full i686 processor by linux standards. Intel 686 processors (Pentium II and above) are above 233mhz. AMD 686 processors (Athlon or Duron) are above 600mhz. So you have to find out if you have an Intel (PII) 333 or an AMD (K6II) 333mhz. If it`s a AMD it won`t work.

From what I recollect, it is an AMD.
