i386 or i686?

i have RH9 installed on a AthlonXP 1700+. When i downloaded the ISOs i tried to read which to choose and basically what i read said i686 was for the new Pentium 4s, so i got i386.

Now i have read that i386 if for old 386s and i686 is for bascically over 1ghz cpus.

Now my question is, can i upgrade to the i686 kernal (if thats waht it is)?
Would there be a preformance increase using i686 on the XP 1700+ rather than the i386?

Thanks

but would it be worth doin?

could be as from what i've heard i686 kernels are optomized for newer hardware. all my kernels have always been for i686.

thanx megaspaz

just one more quick question....

on boot up i read a line that states my chip is a i686, does that mean the kernal is already configured to i686??

no. that's just a label i believe that states your machine is running on a p3 or higher.
