Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi, I would like to upgrade my keranl in Mandrake 9. Problemis they have instructions for RH8 but I have foundnothing on M9.
I have dowloaded the latest patch 2.4.20 and untared it ARK.
What do I do next and wher do I extract it too.
You'd probably be better off compiling a new kernel rather than patching it. I'm not familiar with Mandrake 9, so I don't know what kernel it uses. Go to here to download the latest kernel sources. And then you can follow the instructions here .
If you insist on patching it, there are instructions in the second link on how to do it. I think you'd be better off learning how to compile a new kernel though. It's really not that difficult. Good Luck.
How would ne go about finding out where the kernal is installed at?
whansrds has given me something to try, but in Mandy under the /usr/scr was emapty I created a directory to store my patch into.
I am running Mandy 9 and would like to get this upgraded today if possible.
I tried the other directions and nothing happen so I would assume I did not have the source to replace kernel or right location to do this in.
