Cool I want to build and host 300 U.S. voters with another billion or so visitors.

HI folks, Yes you read right. I am considering Solaris, Ubuntu, and Suse. Since I have never done this before what do you suggest. Thanks bb.

Whatever you use I would suggest using the LTS version (long term service version). In the past I would have said go with Ubuntu server however I find Red Hat to be particularly good. So I think you should use CentOS (free version of Red Hat lacking corporate support). When you say hosting 300 voters do you mean webhosting? Listserver? Mail server? VPN? Local user logins?

You need to give us more information and do your homework more before you can expect to see any kind of quality response to your question. Figure out what you really want to ask.

Right, and "[a] billion or so visitors"? Per hour? Per day? Per year? Per decade?

Depending on what you're intending to host, you may have a wee bit of difficulty scaling to a number of that size.

Indeed, 'build and host 300 U.S. voters' is meaningless; you can't 'host' people.
What exactly do you mean by this?
Also, as above, 'a billion visitors' : in what time period?

Also, what's up with the "US voters?" This question seems kind of odd.......

Ah, cross-posts, and the wonders thereof:

Looking at the other instance of this question, the one that has been closed off, there is a critical difference in the titles:

At least one has to be wrong. I'm guessing that 300 US voters wouldn't be such a big deal as 300 miliion, but you never can tell.

If you want to host US voters, you need a hotel, not on operating system.

Why? He/She admitted we were right and left it at that. Sounds pretty straight forward to me.
