I am a complete beginner. I grew up using Windows but I have recently been introduced to Linux by a friend. I support the overall philosophy and I am very impressed with it's usability.
I would like to convert to Linux completely. I am trying to buy a new laptop for myself and was wondering if I could get it with something like Debian pre-installed? I imagine this would be cheaper also but I can not seem to find an online store that sells anything like this. I know I could buy one with Windows installed and then change it after but this seems like an unnecessary expense to me. Can someone please advise me how to buy a laptop with Linux, or at least with no OS installed by default? Thank you |
Probably your best bet for linux pre-installed on a laptop is to purchase one from Dell or HP. Tier one vendors began slowly introducing linux OS options over a year ago. HP and Dell both offer models with Ubuntu installed, which is debian based.
Another option is EmperorLinux or System76. But I would consider that the larger proportion of laptop users that have linux installed - downloaded and installed the distro of their choice onto a laptop that originally had Windows installed. Installing Linux is usually much easier than installing Windows and takes much less time. An attractive option for new users is to dual-boot Windows/Linux and will give you a egress option for those times in case the frustration factor sets in... One question, is there a reason why you would like debian installed? |

i am in the uk so I will try to find somewhere closer to buy from. no real reason why i would choose Debian, other than that was the distribution that my friend introduced me too. thanks again |

I have been to both Currys and Comet and they both sell netbooks with Linux preloaded - Ubuntu or Suse. The netbooks are available for around £200 and are a good point to start with.
