I need to add something to my path as root

I'm attempting to run vim-go inside of vim to code go inside of vim but when I try to run commands such as :GoLint I get $GOPATH is not set. This only happens when I run vim as sudo but without sudo everything works fine.

I'm guessing the path is only set up for non root users so how do I add $GOPATH to root?

NEVERMIND I simply needed to change ownership of said file in order to read/write to it using a non root user!
