What kind of files? What do you want to do with them? We need to know these things in order to help you.

Just guessing, since we don't have any details about what you're wanting, but if all you need to do is open them, then run Libreoffice (or openoffice), click "File->Open", then pick a document. Just like you would in Microsoft office.

Also, if this is a new installation, STOP WHERE YOU ARE, and load the LATEST version of Fedora, which is 20. You are SEVERAL revisions behind, and things are only going to get worse (from a bugfix/security update/able-to-install-new-software) standpoint.

Libreoffice.

If you need any more compatibility than that, a free outlook.com account will allow you to open Dox and Spreadsheets online.

if you recently switched to fedora ?
then WHY did you install a dewad and unsupported version ?
Fedora 16 is 4 versions out of date and 2 years unsupported

The current version is Fedora 20

as to a MS office doc
install Libreoffice 4

but again
Fedora 16 is a UNSUPPORTED VERSION
--- DO NOT USE IT !!! ---

BUT
fedora would have already installed "GOffice" by default from the old 16 install dvd
so a office program is already installed

OpenOffice.org is the place to visit to free you from the bloat/vendor lock ware that is MS Office. OOo is better, faster, more secure, more reliable, and 100% cross platform plus its free as in beer. Ive been using it since 2000 and refuse to look back. even at work I install OOo on my system and never use the "pre-installed" MS Office.

Before you install LibreOffice (or OpenOffice), you might want to try openjing the Word document using Abiword, and the Excel document using Gnumeric (assuming Abiword and Gnumeric are already installed). YMMV, but you've got nothing to lose by trying.
