You should have ping. Try this instead:

/bin/ping -c 3 http://www.google.com....w/spaces......./ping:unknown host www.google.com..(I wasn't sure if I was suppose to have spaces or not so I typed it out both ways.
//bin/ping-c3www.google.com........w/o spaces.....response....bash: //bin/ping-c3www.google.com: no such file or directory.

/bin/ping -c 3 8.8.8.8 .....response...
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.117 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.117 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable

---8.8.8.8 ping statistics ----

am i doing ok?

Yes, you're doing ok. Your connection unfortunately isn't.

Have you still got a Ubuntu Live CD/DVD? Can you boot a computer off it and try if you can connect?

Also, in the link I posted several posts ago, have a look at the graphical section of devoted to editing/adding a wired connection. Looking at the instructions given there, can you add one?
