What distribtion (Fedora? Ubuntu? etc.)/desktop (Gnome? KDE? etc.) environment you use? It helps a bit to know, perhaps..at least Gnome (and KDE?) have quite easy graphical tools to add printers, for a start. Please describe your system a bit and we can help.
For your printer, try opening this address in your web browser: http://127.0.0.1:631 you ought to get the Cups web interface, which you can use to add/configure printers. If the page won't open, try as root and if it won't work with that either, then post here, it's quite a simple one to fix then. |
keep in mind that lexmark has the worst linux support in the industry, so don't be surprised if it can't be made to work.
plug the webcam in and enter lsusb as root to find the manufacturer and device id, it'll look like -> 1234:5678 and post it here. |

There are some Lexmark printers reviewed in the HCL of this forum here., The model you mention is not listed and, as far as I can tell no Linux driver is available for that specific printer. Some drivers for other models with occassionally work with other printer models from Lexmark, but it is pretty hit and miss. I have one that just won't work.

lexmark has a linux dev kit..
I don't have time now.. but I have the z735, and if there isn't a driver by the end of this month I'm considering to play around with the kit to make it work for this printer the site has guide on how to do it and there's a z700 driver made that way http://users.cybercity.dk/~dko12479/ doesn't work for me.. but perhaps someone had better luck. the author of that driver said it made very little changes to the original kit.. just can't figure out why lexmark doesn't take the time to do it themselves. anyway.. I think the printer will be supported eventually. just hang in there ;) |
This is about installing tar.gz, in your case your driver.
It is a sticky for mandriva but should be equally applicable http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=203939 >>im really interested You may want to read rute and linux newbie admin guide (search through LQ bookmarks) to get some linux background. There will be info about tar.gz file Some bacground about why linux is not like windows http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm no need to shout for help From memory you will need to open a terminal find where the driver is then tar -zvf nameoftaggzfile ls -l (the equivalent to dos dir) cd nameoftaggzfile_directory ls -l less INSTALL (to read the doc) |
I also got one.
A lexmark Z735 for Xmas.
I sent a mail to Lexmark to request a driver. If they can give us a kit to make one they can make the driver and put it on the webpage, and they will sell more printer of the kind. They only way to get to make them come up with a driver is to request one, every user should mail them like i did and say "hey wake up canon has linuxdrivers for there printers if you don't come up with one, i must leave it back" Got no answer, so i'am meaning to support the vendor wich support linux. If they just gave me an answer i might have kept it. /Andy |
