I need help installing Mandrake 9.1
 

I downloaded both CD's last night and I would like to install everything now. I've been told that it already has a dual booter in it but I haven't partitioned my drives yet. I know that Mandrake 9.1 comes with partition software but I dunno where it is and when to do it. And I also have no idea on how to install it. Somebody please help out a little newb?

it's all part of the installation program, you'll be asked to divide the drive as and when it needs to

Whatever you do, don't use a 3rd party partitioning program. make sure to back up *everything* on your other partitions, and let Mandrake do the rest.

I have a similar question to this one. I downloaded the .iso files from linuxiso.org and burned them to CD-Rs, but when I put them in the system I want to install Mandrake on, I can't get the installer to run. The computer I'm installing it on does support booting from the CD drive, as I previously installed Red Hat 8.0 using the disks that came with the Linux for Dummies book. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

I appreciate the info regore! At this time, I don't currently have RedHat installed on this system, just Win Me that I need for other purposes. Is there any way to install Mandrake on this system as a dual boot? Again, I appreciate the info, and thank you in advance!

In win ME you can use rawrite to put the image on a floppy. Mandrake will be fine resizing your FAT partition and setting up the bootloader for you. This will all be done in the installer.

The ISO's that I downloaded were about 600Mb for the first and the other two were about 300Mb each. I rewrote them onto blank cd's. Do I just restart my computer with CD 1 in to install Mandrake?

You have bad iso's i think. they are 700 meg iso's check the MD5sums before burning to CD. if they match with the ones on mandrake's official site go ahead burn them onto CD and boot to CD1

I got mine from Mandrakesoft, not sure what the website address is.. I *think* it's www.mandrakesoft.com. Still, that doesn't mean that you have bad isos if you got them somewhere else. There are lots of mirror sites, I bet.

redgore suggested you check the md5sums, and that's a good thought. Go to www.etree.org and download their md5sum.exe. Also, there's directions on the site for how to use the program to check the .md5 files to be sure they aren't corrupted.

You use something like md5sum -c <filename.md5> and it checks the .md5 you have against the one on the server to be sure it wasn't corrupted during download.

I have heard that there's a problem with downloading via http instead of ftp. I'm not sure how true that is, but I believe it was mentioned in the Mandrake 9.1 read me file, available on the download page.

Oops, I mean I got it from http://www.linuxiso.org/ I got recommended from alot of people to get it there so I did.

When downloading ISO's it is best to get them from an official mirror. Mandrake's site has a list of these. either of those URLs you posted points to the same site. you DO NOT need to be a member of the mandrake club to download from the mirrors. when on the download page just choose the option of "I am already a member or will subscribe later" this will bring you to the mirror list.
