I need Help. compiling error "make symlinks dep"

I've been having this problem with my cdrom
Red Hat 8 freezes when I try to mount it or write to it. Then all I can do is a hard reboot.

So I was pokin around and found the Linux kernel configurator.

And found the section on SCSI emulation. Of course it's not enabled so I did then It asked me to run "make symlinks dep"

so i tried that and got an error. I searched and a thread on this forum said to run it in /usr/src/linux so I did in /usr/src/linx-2.4

so is there anything else I have to do. before I attempt to reboot or try using my cdrom?

Please let me know... ANything!
