I need GUI help

I'm no stranger to computers or UNIX-based OS's, but my first Linux adventure involves me today installing Debian 2.2 on my PC without any problems (except that for some strange reason it doesn't like the fact that my modem is on COM3, but I could really not care less about my modem; at school I use ATM 155 ;)).

Anyhoo, it says it had no problem installing Gnome, but I can't get the mofo to run. I have a feeling I'm overlooking something idiotically simple, so if any guru can knock this one out of the park for me, I'd be most grateful.

In case you need to know, I have a GeForce2 and a P4 1500 (sorry).

I know I can count on the community to kick some @$$ for me, so thanks in advance.

Although this is not the same problem I was having before, my Linux partition eventually just disappeared, without me doing anything in it. I'm going to go play with an emulator to get the feel of it on my machine. Thanks anyway.
